“FUTURES”

The wiNe world is changing, and we are here to talk about it.

What does the future of the wine world hold? New generations are taking over legendary houses, there is a global focus on sustainability, and more conscious alcohol consumption is driving interest in smaller formats and packaging that extends shelf life. Additionally, the move away from cork, and the economic impact of importing heavy glass bottles are all contributing to unique alternative packaging approaches.

These events are dedicated to the future of wine.

Enjoy a class taught by guests of Mere Point Oysters and Sommelier Russell Hewey on the terroir of oysters and its relationship to classic wine pairings.  This class will feature a flight of three 2oz pours paired with oysters served on the half shell.  How will the future of Maine’s seafood industry be affected by climatic changes?  And, how does terroir play a role?

Limited seating available. Must be 21+ to attend.

5 - 7PM: WINE TASTING WITH RAS WINES @ VESSEL & VINE

FREE, no need to RSVP

As global warming changes the climatic face of “traditional” wine terroirs, we must look to alternative regions and alternative fruit sources. In Maine, that means making wine from wild lowbush blueberries, a fruit source that has a history in Maine that dates back 10,000 years. Through the lens of RAS’ blueberry and other fruit wines we can explore how sometimes the answer to our future challenges can come from the past… And don’t be scared - fruit/blueberry wine does not equal sweet wine! Part of the goal of this tasting is to debunk that myth as well. These wines span the full range of wine styles and are absolutely delicious!

Buy 6 or more wines on the night of a tasting, you get 10% off! Must be 21+ to participate.

5:30 - 8PM: WINE DINNER @ THE BRUNSWICK ELK’S LODGE “THE FUTURE: FARM TO TABLE”

$65.00/pp, excluding tax and gratuity. Tickets through Resy.com

$45/pp, excluding tax and gratuity. Call 207-721-3000 for reservations.

Hybrid Grape Varieties And Their Importance For The Future of Wine.  All “classic” grape varieties come from the Eurasian grape species Vitis Vinifera, and with the onset of globalization and global warming these grapes have been increasingly challenged by diseases, changing temperatures, and extreme weather patterns.  The start of the 20th century saw the rise of hybrid grapes (crosses of non Vinifera grape species), which have slowly become important players in the future of wine.  Come taste through five wines made from hybrid grapes, and learn about the role of these grapes in the past, present, and future of winemaking across the world.  And if that sounds like a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo, don’t worry, it’s still going to be an opportunity to taste some great wine, eat some food, and learn some good facts for your next social hour.

Tickets include sips and snacks.  Must be 21+ to attend.

WEEK-LONG EXPERIENCES

ENOTECA ATHENA is pouring wines by the glass that highlight newer winemakers who have assumed the production of famous legacy estates.  Engage with the stories behind these infamous houses and learn how the next generation is balancing tradition and innovation as they shape the future of these time-honored wineries.  Additionally the menu has been curated to honor the past, bringing back small plates of Enoteca’s most sought after dishes!  Don’t miss a little taste of everything.

VESSEL & VINE will be offering wines by the glass made with an eye to the future: wines utilizing hybrid grapes, alternative fruit sources, and varieties perhaps not being grown in their “traditional” territories. We will have these wines available in flights, by the half glass, full glass and bottle

TAVERNA KHIONE will be pouring wines focusing on the past with historic wineries like Kir-Yianni along with pouring wines of the present and future from Cyprus and wineries like Tsiakkas. How about a glass of the oldest named wine, from the 12th century, still in production? As always, half and full glass pours will be available.

THE ABBEY will feature a menu highlighting producers and makers dedicated to the future of their crafts. They will be serving innovative dishes that celebrate Maine's viable economic and ecological future paired with wines that prioritize craft and durability over convenience. Enjoy a glass of wine from a producer that is completely off grid! The future of wine is sustainability!
